on family.

i grew up in a land far, far away from nyc (virginia, to be precise). however, all of my extended family lived in the nyc suburbs. while this made for many fun trips as a kid, we often missed out on little things - an impromptu get-together, a sweet 16 here and there. so i am thrilled that i get to see my extended family more often, like on saturday when my cousin threw a house party, and many other cousins came. guess which one i'm related to?
yeah...cousins? more like sisters. i still get a bit giddy to know that it's so easy to see my extended family. and about my awesome new earrings from anthropologie - not online but hurry down to your local store and pick up a pair. you won't be disappointed!

on my sweet tooth.

it's a major problem. but on the weekends i like to indulge it. so while it's monday and i'm rushing back to work, i'll be thinking about this.
and this. however, i'll be having one of these shortly in order to perk me up.
if you're ever in nyc and hankering for a baked good, like i was yesterday, check out Tarallucci E Vino. it was awesome. happy monday everyone!

on saturday mornings.

they are made for the farmer's market. and picking up the best milk i've ever had from ronnybrook farm.
however, i do kind of wish it was summer and saturday mornings were for trips to the beach. le sigh. hope you stayed warm and had a fabulous saturday!

on etsy.

i told you there would be a lot of these!!!

while my apartment in nyc is tiny, it is mine, and as time passed i looked for ways to decorate it in order to make it feel like home. since i rent and don't own, there isn't too much i can do, but in times of need i always turn to etsy for inspiration. and thus, my beautiful wall scone!
it hangs above my couch, right in between two drawings of various nyc landmarks that my parents gave to me on my first christmas in this wonderful city. (note: when someone moves to an exciting new place, a gift commemorating that new place is always welcome). and so you have: my living room.
it's not much, but it's mine. where do you look for design inspiration?

p.s. wall scone purchased here.

p.p.s. i saw ramona from the real housewives of nyc in my office building today. one of the perks of working in rockefeller center. however, as i am trying to be a "true new yorker", i played it cool and walked by. it's what we new yorkers do.

on being a bridesmaid.

this past weekend i got to attend my friend's wedding with the honor of a being a bridesmaid. on a perfect florida day, 83 with no humidity, i watched her marry her soulmate. aren't they cute?
i had a blast with the other girls, and we did a very nice job of tearing up the dance floor. in fact, we were some of the only ones tearing up the dace floor!
while i'm sure being a bride is incredibly special, i loved being a part of the festivities to prepare her for the big day, and standing up there to support her.
i know getting married can be a scary thing, but it's only when we fully experience everything life has to offer, and set aside our fears, that we feel truly alive.i was so happy for the couple, and doesn't she look beautiful?
i love love.

on posting.

sorry for posting so little, kids! i'm headed out to florida tomorrow for a wedding and the sweet, sweet heat that i'm longing to feel. here's to sweating!

i'm sure i will have fabulous things to share when i get back. have a wonderful weekend!

p.s. most importantly, happy st. patrick's day!!!

on southern food.

i love southern food, it is my weakness. heck, the whole south is my weakness. i have such a pull to the way i feel when in the south. it's a beautiful place with a complicated past filled with complicated people. and a soft, southern summer night is worth a million in the north.

but i digress.

it was to my delight that i found wonderful fried chicken this weekend, in brooklyn of all places. if you're in town, try the commodore.
and don't forget to wear a pair of fierce shoes while you're there.

on the weekend

why is it we only drink champagne when we are celebrating something big? it's the weekend - isn't that enough of a reason to celebrate? i think so.
enjoy your weekend, and don't be afraid to celebrate it with a little champagne.

on a favorite gift.

this is the first of my posts on a favorite gift of mine, and why.

after a month of dating, my boyfriend and i went to a dave matthews concert together. it was incredibly fun, sweet, and romantic. when an opportunity came to go another one in the new mets stadium in nyc, with the amazing zac brown band as an opener, we jumped on it.
when we walked in i noticed a unique concert poster being sold - it recalled nyc with the skyline referenced on the bottom of the poster - and the baseball stadium by showcasing the name of the band on a baseball. but what made it truly awesome was that the baseball was within the famous Mets' apple - the apple that appears in center field out of nowhere when the mets hit a home run - and the apple was broken up into tiny puzzle pieces that said "muffler" and "auto glass". as a girl raised with a father who was a faithful mets fan, i knew it referenced the fact that the old mets stadium, shea stadium, was surround by auto chop shops.

to say the least: it. was. awesome. it referenced things only a new yorker would get. only a mets fan would appreciate. it was the ultimate sign of coolness for a non-hipster like me.

and 30 minutes after we walked in and got settled, it was already sold out. apparently it was "limited edition". i was heart broken. i had fallen for it. hard. i was ready to show it off to my dad who would be thrilled his non-mets fan daughter still "got it". i scrounged around e-bay for it, coming up with many sales topping $200, when it was originally $35 in the stadium.

and then... my boyfriend gave it to me for my birthday. all he said was that he found it for a very reasonable price, also on e-bay.
it showed that he listened. that he cared. that he took the time to find it. that he went the extra mile for me.

and that's what a gift is all about.

on dinner.

i look forward to dinner all day. all. day. and it's usually because of these puppies.
my artichoke raviolis.

ravioli is an awesome dinner for a single, busy girl like me. easy to make, takes less than five minutes, and, most important, tasty and affordable! shoot, this would be a good dinner for a family. sauté a little garlic in oil, sprinkle on a little cheese, pour on the garlic-spiked oil and voile - dinner!

and, to my delight, i recently tried butternut squash ravioli, which i put in sage brown butter sauce, and it lives up to the same standards as those mentioned above. doesn't it look delightful, too?
not all raviolis are as good as these two, so take my word for it. naturally, these can be found at trader joe's, the best grocery store in the world.

ravioli, kids. it's what's for dinner.

on holiday candy

it's that time of year again. my favorite time? (well noooooo, that would be christmas), but reese's easter eggs are here!
i don't know why, but it tastes so much better than a regular reese's peanut butter cup! pair it with a glass of milk and you're set.
i'm thinking it's due to the fact that there's so much more peanut butter in their holiday candy. and yes, the christmas trees they come out with in the winter are just as divine as the easter eggs. if you're looking for the perfect little something to put in an easter basket this spring, you've found it.

on wedding gifts.

i'm headed to the first wedding in which i am a bridesmaid,
(exciting! expensive!)
and all of us were asked to draw three quilt squares. the bride's grandma is making a personalized quilt, in which these will be included.
i went to high school with the bride, so i based mine on that - ya know, beach week, sharing lockers, and all that jazz. i like giving a good friend a registry gift alongside a more meaningful and thoughtful one for their wedding. what do you do?

on galoshes.

yes, galoshes. not rainboots. obvi.

on my first day of work in nyc it rained and i thought - i really need a pair of galoshes! naturally, a year and a half later, i finally bought a pair. (there's just so much more to buy, ya know? like stilettos). i love them very much, and buying them before the huge christmas snowstorm was key, freeing up my snow boots for my sister to borrow, who was visiting.

aren't they precious?

they come from the magical store of target, and were everything i was looking for. the plaid gives them personality while stopping rain or snow from coming in the boot, and they were affordable to boot! (or, to galosh, get it?!) i could never wrap my mind around buying a $100 pair of galoshes, a la the Hunter brand, as most new york city girls seem to do these days.

this was a long post on my love for my galoshes. kind of sad.
